Little tricks to speed up Ubuntu 9.10 karmic koala

  • enable preload: sudo apt-get install -y preload
    Find detailed information on preload here.
  • disable Pango smoothing on Firefox export MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1. Put this in your ~/.bash_profile or ~/.bashrc.
  • start Firefox and go to about:config. Change network.http.pipelining from false (default) to true, network.http.pipelining.maxrequests from 4 to 8, network.http.proxy.pipelining from false to true, network.dns.disableIPv6 from false to true, plugin.expose_full_path from false to true, Create a new Preference name with interger value named nglayout.initialpaint.delay with value 0, Create one more Preference name with interger value named content.notify.backoffcount with value 5, Create one more Preference name with interger value named ui.submenuDelay with value 0.
  • Firefox memory leak fix: Go to about:config. New → Integer named browser.cache.memory.capacity. This is where you decide how much memory to allocate to Firefox. A good setting is 16MB. So enter 16384.
